Ponty Say Farewell to a Legend

"The term Legend can be defined as an extremely famous or notorious person, especially in a particular field, or described as someone very well known."

No other word could ever be used for Derek Morris who sadly passed away at home on Saturday the 21st February. People will ask, why it has taken some time to write something on the site for this legend of a man... well the truth is that it was very difficult to find the right words to say and to narrow down all the stories and good things that people had to say for Derek.

Derek, or Maulers as he was known on the rugby field, is father of current club captain Dai Morris. He served in every role possible withing Pontardawe RFC from a formidable front row forward during the 70's, club captain during the 1975-76 season and onwards to club president.

Derek was well known and respected not only by those of Pontardawe RFC, but by the rugby community as a whole. From the well wishes recieved from other rugby clubs, pays testiment to Derek and his reputation within rugby. Within the club, Derek was famed as a singer of songs and teller of tales during happy times at the bar and renditions of welsh songs bringing joy to all who were in his presence. Tributes paid are seen to be overwhelming, with a huge number of people not just within rugby, but from the community at large paying tributes to a true gentleman.

In the words of Andrew "Tarw" Evans, "Heaven will be alot more fun now that they have Derek".

Pontardawe RFC would like to convey their deepest sympathy to Carol, Shelley and club captain Dai at this difficult time and can assure them of its full support during the times ahead.

Dereks funeral is Thursday the 12th of march. Public service at 9:50 in Calfaria chapel which is on Station Road, Ystradgynlais. Followed by service and cremation at 11 at Morriston.
