Last gasp winner causes heartbreak for Ponty

Ponty were the causes to their own downfall last weekend after some ill disicpline in the dying moments of the game at home to Tonna.

Ponty started off well with a try from flying fullback Mathew "Murphy" Edwards. Some silky back play which saw a miss pass by fly-half Jack Jarrett and an inside ball from outside centre Dicky Williams to Murphy, saw the Ponty 15 step his opposite number to cross over under the posts for his ninth try of the season. Edwards also added the conversion.

Tonna struck back with a penalty in the first half and threatened the Ponty try line on a few occasions but some good cover defence saw the home side go in at the half in the lead 7-3.

The 2nd half saw some more pressure from the home side who were unable to capitalise until a penalty was given on the Tonna 10m line. Edwards stepped up to slot it, taking it to 10-3 in favour of the home side.

The Ponty pack led by skipper Nigel Williams looked solid and structured throughout worked tiredlesly for the duration of the game and looked comfortable at set piece, Blindside Flanker Sean Stevens being the standout performer for the home team.

It looked to be another home win for the Cherry and whites until 3 minutes to go. Some ill discipline on the halfway, saw Tonna kick to the corner in hope of snatching a draw. That hope became a reality, when some up the jumper stuff, and some forward oriented pick and go's saw them cross fr a try which was also converted.

With a minute left on the clock a long restart was the preferred option. Tonna were not finished there and ran from their own line, and with a combination of some good running and tired defence gave Tonna some good field position inside the Ponty half. Ponty were stretched and some ill disicpline at the ruck saw Ponty penalised with no time to spare. Some frustration within the Ponty team saw an extra ten yards given for decent, gave Tonna an easier chance to snatch victory, which they indeed took. the game finishing 13-10 to Tonna.

Ponty hope to turn that dissapointing result around tomorrow (8th October), when they play Abercrave in the Cup.
